Trio Blundell — 2016 YAC Junior Winners

Trumpeters Matisse, Aled, and Maslin Blundell started playing trumpet when they were 7, 6, and 5 respectively, and have been playing together ever since! Individually, they have held positions in the Hannaford Youth Program, Guelph Youth Symphony Orchestra, Hamilton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Denis Wick Canadian Wind Orchestra, Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra (touring to Los Angeles and Shanghai), and the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra, among others. Currently, Matisse and Aled play together in Orchestra Toronto under the baton of Maestro Kevin Mallon. Aled and Matisse are 4- and 5-time Kiwanis Music Festival Provincial champions, Matisse twice going on to compete nationally. Last spring, the duo performed in Carnegie Hall as part of the Winners’ Recital of the American Protege International Competition of Romantic Music, and soloed with the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Matthew Jones. Joanna Gorska — 2016 YAC Senior Winner

Joanna Gorska is a graduate of the Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists and a current student of The University of Toronto. Since an early age she has performed and won numerous awards at various music festivals and competitions, including the main prize of the Kiwanis Festival in London – Rose Bowl, two gold medals at the OMFA Provincial Finals and the first place in her age category in Canadian Music Competition in Vancouver in 2015. As the first prize winner of the American Protege International Concerto competition she was invited to perform at the gala concert at Carnegie Hall in New York. She performed as a soloist with The Stratford Symphony Orchestra, Kitchener -Waterloo Chamber Orchestra, The Toronto Sinfonietta, The Celebrity Symphony Orchestra and the RCM Academy Chamber Orchestra. Hannah Corbett — 2016 YAC Junior Runner-Up

Hannah Corbett is a 16 year old violinist from Maple, Ontario. She is the recipient of the Mercier-Hantho scholarship at the Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto where she studies with Atis Bankas. Hannah is a six- time Gold medalist and scholarship recipient at the Kiwanis Music Festival and is the 2016 Ontario Provincial Champion in Diploma Strings. In May 2016, Hannah was the third prize winner at the 58th Kocian International Violin Competition in the Czech Republic. Hannah was a scholarship recipient at the National Arts Centre 2016 Young Artists Program in Ottawa and has performed in masterclasses for Ilya Kaler and Grigory Kalinovsky. Lindsay Bui — 2016 YAC Junior Runner-Up

Lindsay Bui started to learn piano at the age of Seven, She is currently a scholarship student of The Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. She has won many awards in many competitions and festivals, including the finalist of 2014 Canadian Music Competition, second place at the 2015 Canadian Music Competition and first place in age achievement under 14 in the 2016 Markham Music Festival. Lindsay has also completed her Royal Conservatory of Music level 8 Violin exam. Lindsay has performed in many “Rising Star Concerts” in the Greater Toronto Area. Lindsay likes running, swimming and reading.

Lindsay will be playing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37, 1st movement at our “Rising Stars” concert on Sunday, April 2, 2017.



Kari Abraham — 2016 YAC Senior Runner-Up

Kari Abraham is a passionate lyric soprano. She is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in voice performance at the University of Toronto where she studies with Wendy Nielsen. Ms. Abraham has attended various training programs such as Wendy Nielsen’s Vocal Technique Workshop, and COSI (Center for Opera Studies in Italy). Throughout her training she has had the privilege of working with Liz Upchurch, Anne Larlee, Tom Diamond, Russel Braun, Warren Jones, Michael McMahon, and Steven Philcox. Ms. Abraham holds a bachelor’s degree in performance from the University of Toronto, and in her last year was a chorister in UofT’s production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore. This past year she appeared as Emma in Toronto Operetta Theater’s production of Guerrero’s Los Gavilanes, and Guiletta in Summer Opera Lyric Theater’s production of Les contes d’Hoffman. Symphony on the Bay

Symphony on the Bay is a community-based symphony orchestra serving Hamilton, Burlington and surrounding areas. We began in 1973 as the McMaster Symphony Orchestra, left the university to become Symphony Hamilton in 1988, and rebranded as Symphony on the Bay in 2011 to reflect our role in the wider Hamilton-Burlington community. We made our new home in the magnificent Burlington Performing Arts Centre in 2011. Maestro Claudio Vena was appointed Conductor and Music Director in December 2015, succeeding Maestro James R. McKay who was our Conductor and Music Director for 19 years and now holds the title of Music Director Emeritus. Our orchestra, comprised of students, highly skilled amateurs and a core of professional players, is looking forward to this new chapter in the life of Symphony on the Bay. We hope you will be part of this new chapter!
